From the Daily News
NYCLU takes aim at NYPD Police tactics during last year's Republican National Convention showed the NYPD was unfit to handle large demonstrations, a report by the New York Civil Liberties Union said yesterday.
The NYCLU argued that police abuses during the convention were extreme enough to justify the creation of an independent agency to oversee future demonstrations.
"Protests are not a criminal event," said Christopher Dunn, the NYCLU's associate legal director. "They should not be treated as a law enforcement problem."
The 65-page report - "Rights and Wrongs at the RNC" - blasted Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly for "refusing to acknowledge ... any mistakes."
But Kelly called the NYPD's actions "a model of expert planning, professionalism and restraint."
Kelly dismissed the report as "a collection of old, untrue assertions and uncorroborated, self-serving statements by individuals who were arrested in the course of the convention."
