The downpours soaking the city broke a one-day record yesterday and put this month on course to become the wettest October ever, forecasters said.
More than 4 inches of rain fell in Central Park yesterday, breaking the mark for the day set in 1993 and snarling roads, subways and air travel.
This month is already the fifth-wettest October on record, with nearly 10 inches of precipitation in less than two weeks. The number to beat is the 13.31 inches that fell in October 1903.
In the next day or so, October rainfall could exceed the 10.73 inches that fell in June, July and August combined.
At Newark Airport, incoming flights were delayed up to 51/2 hours yesterday. There were two-hour delays on average at LaGuardia, and as much as an hour and 40 minutes for arrivals at Kennedy.
As the deluge hit the Bronx, a 20-by-50-foot section of the roof collapsed at S&T Auto Body at 4632 Third Ave. in East Tremont. Two men suffered minor injuries.
The rain also caused part of a retaining wall to fall along Eagle Ave. in Mott Haven about 6:30 p.m. Firefighters evacuated about 100 people from neighboring buildings.
Flooding snarled traffic throughout the area.
