Until yesterday, Sylvester Artemus had never won anything in his life.
But the luck of the 58-year-old mechanic from Brooklyn finally turned in a big way - he's the latest winner of the Daily News' Scratch n' Match contest.
Artemus, a father of four from Bedford-Stuyvesant, was ecstatic when he found out he had just become $10,000 richer.
"I am very happy because now I can get my family some of the things they want," he said.
Last Sunday, the hardworking grandfather started his day the same way he has for the last 36 years - reading the Daily News.
He played the Scratch n' Match - and couldn't believe his eyes.
"After I scratched out the numbers, I thought this can't be," Artemus said. "I thought how could I win something? I've been working all my life and nothing like this has ever happened. I've never gotten anything without working for it."
When he received the $10,000 check yesterday, the happy reality began to set in.
"These things don't happen to people like me," Artemus said.
Now, he plans to shower his wife, Lula, and his four kids - Ophelia, 35, Francesca, 32, Camille, 31, and Daniel, 30 - with gifts.
But most importantly, he'll start a college fund for his granddaughter, 14-month-old Zha'nice Renee Allen.
Camille, Zha'nice's mother, said the Scratch n' Match prize has raised the spirits of the entire family.
"We feel a lot of excitement because this is the largest amount of money this family has ever won before," she said. "We are very overjoyed about it."
The new Scratch n' Match Power Jackpot game offers an impressive 2,655 cash prizes per week and a jackpot that gets bigger every week, culminating in a top cash prize of $250,000.
Readers who want to submit prize claims can do so by mailing card(s) with a photocopy of proper identification to: Scratch n' Match Claims, c/o Game & Contest Services, 8300 Douglas Ave., Suite 602, Dallas, Tex. 75225, or they can validate the claim in person at: The Daily News Validation Center, W.31st St. (Bay 19), between Ninth and 10th Aves. in Manhattan.
