From the Daily News: Mag Ads a Retro Bonus to Its First Issue
By DAVID HINCKLEY DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
A new magazine called Cinema Retro, which focuses on movies of the '60s and '70s, includes a cool radio bonus for subscribers with its first issue: 22 minutes of original radio movie ads.
The earliest are two spots for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 "Psycho," in which Hitchcock drolly explains that contrary to popular belief, the movie does not leave patrons "speechless." He knows this, he says, because he hears them running out screaming.
A 1970 spot for "Patton," interestingly, never uses George C. Scott's voice. Peter Sellers, on the other hand, is all over the "Pink Panther Strikes Again" spot.
The spot for "Sergeants 3" provides a nice Rat Pack moment, circa 1962, while fans of the long-forgotten "Hannie Caulder" (1971) can hear Raquel Welch securing a gun so she can go kill people.
Other spots include "The Longest Day," "Straw Dogs," "Bonnie and Clyde" and "The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3," which has some nice subway sound effects.
Good stuff. The magazine is fun, too, with text like a vintage Steve McQueen interview. Check it out at www.cinemaretro.com.
