R&R has obtained an internal memo from Clear Channel/New York SVP/Programming Tom Poleman to WWPR (Power 105.1)/New York staff confirming that WWPR PD Michael Saunders is no longer with the company. The memo also states that Clear Channel VP/Urban Programming Doc Wynter will serve as interim PD at WWPR, officially taking over those duties on Thursday.
Saunders was one of several programmers mentioned in the Sony/BMG Music settlement reached with New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office, which followed an investigation into the record industry and alleged "payola" practices.
The settlement stated that in August 2004, Sony BMG arranged to send an entertainment system — including a plasma TV — to Saunders' home address. The settlement also says that a Sony Urban executive "first sought to falsely account for the transaction as promotional support for WWPR." The Attorney General's investigators discovered the plan before the equipment was delivered, and Saunders never received the items.
Yesterday, CC noted that two individuals would be terminated in the wake of the investigation. However, as of press time, the company has not named the second person.
