Dees in the Breeze
(February 4, 2004) Rick Dees spent the last few days at his second home in Lexington. He needed the peace and quiet to sort things out. His contract with Clear Channel and KIIS/fm was coming to an end this year and he needed to make a decision on how he wanted to spend the next five years. Clear Channel made an offer, which would undoubtedly take him off the morning show, where he has been a fixture for well over two decades. Was he ready to step down and concentrate on the very successful Weekly Top 40 countdown show and pursue other projects? Was there an opportunity to take his magic to another station in the market? Was it time to settle in the rolling hills of Kentucky and tend to his farm and radio projects from the South, not far from where he grew up?
Rick announced last week that he would have a “life-changing” announcement this morning at 6:30 a.m. He has been vacillating from day to day on what to do. Many days the vacillation would be hour to hour. When he stepped off the plane last night and headed for home, he still had not made a final decision as to what he would say this morning.
Rick is a prideful man who does the Top 40 format as well as anyone since the concept was devised. Johnny Carson must have had some real difficult days and weeks leading up to the point when he stepped down. We've seen all-star sports stars stay with the organization in a new capacity. No one stays at quarterback forever. Is this Rick’s time? We’ll know at the same time that Clear Channel brass finds out. We’ll know at the same time as his long-time friends find out. Fans of Rick Dees will be sitting around the radio this morning staring at the radio, waiting for his “life-changing” announcement.
Or maybe it is just a stunt?
